DESCRIPTION
The growth and development of the musculoskeletal system is not uniform. There are periods of rapid growth of the skeletal extremities which are not necessarily matched with the simultaneous growth of the musculotendinous units. The growth plates are inherently weaker, subjecting them to injury due to the imbalance of growth and with inappropriate stress. Depending on the phase of growth, the type of sport, the intensity of training and the nature of the child, parent or coach, specific extremity injuries will present.
• Intrinsic, extrinsic and psychological and factors associated with extremity injuries in children
• Risks associated with sport extremity injuries in children
• Overuse injuries in the child athlete
• Neuromuscular training for the pediatric atlete
