DESCRIPTION
For far too long, chiropractors have been attacked—often without basis—for performing cervical manipulations, said to cause arterial dissections, strokes, and other problems. In truth, the actual occurrence rate of any of these complications is as low as being struck by lightning or drowning in a bathtub. Furthermore, most of these events have been shown to occur spontaneously, suggesting that underlying problems brought these conditions to the patients, which would have been provoked by numerous daily lifetime activities. Finally, serious side effects including fatalities have been shown to occur with medical interventions at rates hundreds of times more frequently—yet are inexplicably accepted as a matter of course. This presentation will review this entire imbalance of perceptions, including a mechanism involving homocysteine which appears to account for many of the incidents of arterial weakness and stroke that have been reported.
