DESCRIPTION
Prescription and over the counter drugs are metabolized in the liver, primarily by the Cytochrome P450 system. This system requires many of the same nutrients that are needed for other pathways in the body and therefore result in nutrient deficiency of those vitamins and minerals. Additionally, some drugs interfere with key metabolic pathways needed to make important molecules for metabolism and therefore decrease cellular function that may result in cell dysfunction or death. The side effects of drugs are therefore due to the nutrients that are depleted. When patients require medical intervention by the use of allopathic drugs, supplementation with the nutrients that are depleted may reduce the side effect of these drugs and allow patients the benefit of the drug, without these side effects.
Learning Objectives: At the completion of this course the attendee will be able to:
1. List the nutrients depleted by commonly prescribed prescription and over the counter medication.
2. Recommended dietary changes and supplementation for patient general health.
