DESCRIPTION
This lecture focuses on differential diagnosis of low back pain in children and adolescents in an effort to increase the competency of practitioners evaluating and treating children and adolescents. Low back pain in adolescence is common and a precursor for low back pain in adulthood, the leading cause of disability in this population. A detailed understanding of conditions associated with and causing low back pain in adolescence are critical to master so delays in diagnosis are avoided. Recognizing the cause of LBP in adolescence, and managing it conservatively while giving the child tools to gain strength and stability reduces the risks for this disability continuing on into adulthood.
• A thorough understanding of the thought process essential to differentially diagnosing low back pain in children and adolescence
• Understanding the clinical differences between rheumatological, infectious, pathological and mechanical causes of low back pain in children and adolescents and appropriate testing to ensure a correct diagnosis
• Understand the etiology of pediatric LBP and the presentation of the different types of low back pain in children and adults
