This course is designed to teach providers clinically relevant considerations around ergonomics education for sedentary workers and how these considerations impact the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and improved patient outcomes. The primary focus of the material is to help providers to teach patients to develop better body position habits and create favorable body environments to limit and prevent musculoskeletal disorders. This course can be thought of as a “fundamentals of ergonomics and routine body maintenance course,” providing a guideline for patient education about these topics.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of the course, students will:
• Possess an enhanced knowledge of the musculoskeletal and medical risk factors associated with sedentary occupations and poor body position habits
• Be able to educate patients to create and maintain appropriate body positions (neutral alignment) in multiple environments including: sitting and standing workstations both at home and at the office, when driving, and when sleeping
• Know the difference between physical and mental breaks from work and how they should be utilized in the sedentary workday
• Be able to speak meaningfully about the current research regarding sitting and
standing workstations for sedentary work • Be able to guide patients to improve their activity levels and decrease sedentary activity with targeted interventions in daily behaviors
• Be able to teach patients the importance of maintaining proper body position and awareness, especially as they heal from a musculoskeletal disorders
• Understand the timing and amounts of routine body maintenance to recommend to patients for improved musculoskeletal health outcomes
• Understand the clinical documentation requirements to bill major medical insurance for self care/home exercise instruction (97535).
