DESCRIPTION
Lyme disease is the chief arthropod-borne infection in the United States. Due to its ability to mimic so many other diseases with respect to signs and symptoms it is easily misdiagnosed and goes untreated in its earliest stage wherein it is most curable. Patients may also develop long-term Lyme disease symptoms which, while rarely fatal, do cause a decrease in the individual’s quality of life. It is important to understand the transmission, reservoirs, and treatment of Lyme disease because of its high rate of infectivity and corresponding low diagnosis rates to properly diagnose and treat patients in the very narrow window available.
